GALA The Gay And Lesbian Alliance of the Central Coast
1060 Palm Street
San Luis Obispo, CA 93401
The year following the 1969 Stonewall Riots in New York City, LGBT organizers planned a march from Christopher Street to Central Park to commemorate the uprising that launched the LGBT civil rights movement.
Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago, London, and other cities soon followed. Today, over 700 cities around the world celebrate LGBT Pride, including San Luis Obispo.
In 1997, GALA organized the 1st Annual Central Coast Pride. It included a week of activities such as a family picnic, panel discussions, a movie night, and the inaugural Pride in the Plaza.
Over the years, Central Coast Pride has grown from a few hundred attendees to one of the San Luis Obispo’s largest community events.
Community volunteers spend months planning various events aimed to educate, entertain, and celebrate. Central Coast Pride has welcomed such LGBT supporters as RuPaul, Lily Tomlin, Kathy Griffin, Margaret Cho, Wanda Sykes and Joan Rivers, among others.
In 2016 the Central Coast celebrated 20 years of Pride. We look back on the accomplishments of our activism, our work towards inclusivity and equality, and look forward to celebrating our LGBT identity for years to come.
